DeepWiki turns a GitHub repository into readable documentation. It is an AI documentation generator for code that reads a repo, works out how the codebase is structured, and produces docs you can browse without opening every file.
You can also ask questions about the project through a chat interface, which helps when you land in an unfamiliar codebase and want to know where things live or how a piece fits together.
DeepWiki is free for open-source repositories, so trying it on a public project costs nothing.
The catch is that the answers come from AI and may not always be accurate, so check anything important against the source.
Very large or complex repositories may also get weaker coverage.
Some people may need a little practice to get useful answers from the conversational interface.
As an AI research tool for code, DeepWiki suits developers who read other people's projects often: evaluating a library, onboarding to a new codebase, or tracing how an open-source project works.
